Kūkyo (空虚 Kūkyo) is a minor character introduced in the Jigoku Sensei Nube. He is a greedy novice monk who tries to scam people by telling people he has a ability to give anyone happiness.

As Kyōko Inaba's mother were annoyed at how her daughter acts so tomboyish and worrying that she might not able to be married in the future. Kūkyo appeared at Kyōko's house and promised her mother that her daughter's personality will change once he replaced Kyōko's guardian spirit to something else that can reflect her feminine side better. Soon, Kūkyo preformed a spiritual incantation to swapping Kyōko's samurai guardian spirit to a more malevolent spirit named Senkihime. According to Nube, who had discovered that Kūkyo is a liar, Senkihime is a serial murderer who had committed several crimes to achieve absolutely beauty. Due to her nature, Senkihime's presence naturally also attract yokai to attack Kyōko as well.
After Senkihime has been successfully seperated from Kyōko, Nube originally intended to seal Senkihime's spirit for good, but he then changed his time and said it's better off for Senkihime to possesses Kūkyo as a way to teach him a lesson. After Nube replaced Kūkyo's guardian spirit, he began to face bad lucks and encountered many yokai who attacked him for no reason.
Sometimes later, Kūkyo returned to the temple and ask his master for help to exorcise Senkihime's spirit from his body. After Senkihime has been been exorcised, Kūkyo's master scolded him for having malice intend and claimed that he brought all these troubles by himself, in which Kūkyo wasn't happy about that. Soon, Kūkyo found an egg placed inside the temple so he asked him master what that is. His master then explained that it's a dangerous yokai named Remugyō which was sealed by ten exorcists in the form of egg. Kūkyo used this as an opportunity to seal the egg from the temple, intended to release Remugyō to get his revenge on Nube who ruined his "great career". Upon releasing Remugyō, the egg exploded itself and killed Kūkyo in the process.

- He doesn't appear on both 1996 and 2025 anime adaptations. As a result, the way Remugyō manifested itself at Doumori Elementary in both anime is vastly different from the manga.
